"Sixteen-year-old Silver Melody lives in a world where 80% of the population has modified their DNA. Known as the altereds, those people now possess enhancements like wings, tails, and increased strength or intelligence. Although Silver’s parents created the nanite pill used to deliver these genetic modifications, Silver is proud of her unadjusted state. However, when the president declares all unadjusteds must take a nanite, Silver has no choice but to flee the city with her father and some friends to prevent the extinction of the unadjusteds. With Silver’s mother in prison for treason, Silver’s father is the unadjusteds’ only hope at finding a cure. But time is running out as Silver’s father is captured by the president’s almost immortal army. Vicious hellhounds are on Silver’s trail, and her only chance to recover her father involves teaming up with a new group of unlikely friends before all humanity is lost."--Back cover.… (meer)

My rating 3.5 stars

I felt like the first few pages set the tone of the book. This story definitely does not start at a happy time in Silver's life, but from the tone of how she describes what happens it sounds like it's simply something that she has had to get used too. It's a part of life living in a world where people can become almost superhuman just from consuming a nanite pill. The way that Silver causally says "It happens sometimes." on page 3 made me so intrigued to find out just how messed up this world was.

And honestly it is very, very messed up.

His body had rejected the change. It happens sometimes. The Unadjusteds, page 3

As Silver is one of the 20% of the population that isn't Adjust she's very much in the minority. Even though her parents created the nanite pill that gives you different abilities like strength, bulk, telekinesis, wings, etc. Silver has promised that she will never take a nanite pill. So when President Bear announces that everyone must become adjusted to strength the nation against the rest of the world her world completely changes. It stops being a choice, people can't simply refuse to become like the other 80% of the population anymore they are being forced too. To up the percent from 80% to 100%.

No, it shouldn't be forced on anyone. So much for democracy. the unadjusteds, page 15

I enjoyed reading how Silver has to figure out what she is going to do in a world where she is no longer safe to be 'normal', just an average human without any extra abilities. Her life and the lives of many others becomes endangered. Surviving becomes a main priority of the story as the characters have to figure out how to survive and hide away from the rest of society and the president's immortal army that is hunting them down.

What I really liked about Silver was that she was very strongly adamant that she would never take any nanite pill to change herself. Because a past experience, and partly because of her parents involvement in creating these nanites, made her promise that she never would. She just wants to be ordinary and works hard to be able to keep up with her fellow classmates that aren't. But as the story progresses it gets harder and harder for her to simply be 100% human because she's going up against and fighting people who do have extra nonhuman abilities.

At first I did think that this story would be very much a "us vs them" kind of plot but I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't in the way that I had initially expected. Especially as a lot of the plot revolves around nature vs technology, I had innitally thought that there would be a very strong divide between those that were adjusted and those that were unadjusted. But I was glad that it turned out that it wasn't all laid out in black and white.

I thought that this book was a very interesting and imaginative take on a dystopian world that is ruled by technological advancement. It was a very fresh and creative take on a world that is spiralling out of control from technological advance, power hungry governments/people in power, and a rebellion/revolution by Marisa Noelle.
