“I know how many blue beans make five.” An Anguillian saying.
This is the debut novel by Anguillan author Patricia J Adams. It is set in Anguilla in the 1950s and 1960s prior to the revolution in 1967. The story is about young Jeff Lark, whose mother died when he was two, leaving him to grow up with his father.
The relationship between Jeff and his father is central to the story, and tensions develop as Jeff becomes close to the English minister and his family. Ultimately Jeff feels torn between the idea of England as a future destination, and the island with its hardships but familiarity.
The story is written in a Creole patois and creates a very visual picture of life in Anguilla, the food and culture, traditions and superstitions. This was an enjoyable read and important book as it records and preserves many of the cultural traditions of the island. I will definitely look out for the sequel. ( )
