I picked up this book by mistake... but it's a mistake I was more than happy to have made. The story grabbed my attention right from the start with Darby’s sense of humor and wit. I was immediately invested and the more I read, the more drawn in I became. Darby’s supernatural abilities and the circumstances surrounding the murder were intriguing. The deeper the reader goes, the more they uncover. When you add in the fascinating Bishop LaRue you have a concrete story that you just know you are going to want more of. Annie Anderson creates an exciting read with a great mix of humor and mystery. Her characters are complex and bold and I know that we’ve only just begun to scratch the surface. I can’t wait to find the next one and learn more about these characters. This was a fantastic first installment in a great new series with a great deal of promise. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

The pacing is great, the writing, while not extraordinary, is enjoyable and the plot is fine.
The book is a bit too short for the plot overall.
It is not yet possible to tell how an expansion of the series will turn out as there is just too little information about the world yet.
Onto my complaints:
Everyone keeps everything secret from the MC for no reason.
A blind man from a kilometer away could've seen the inevitable coming that always results from these kinds of setups. Because the MC is kept ignorant she can not judge the danger of situations properly and isn't able to properly defend herself either despite
It's a big point of frustration because everyone around her that keeps stuff from her comes across as condescending towards her. There is no reason to believe she couldn't deal with the knowledge or that she would get herself into trouble recklessly based on that knowledge. She is a strong, responsible, and mature character with just enough flaws to make her feel human which I found very refreshing.
There really is no excuse at all for any of the secrecy.
This is especially frustrating because everyone keeps being tight-lipped about everything despite it becoming very obvious the MC is in acute danger and even more so because of her ignorance.
It spoiled a lot of my enjoyment especially because it wasn't necessary for the plot at all. The story would've worked just as well if only the reader was kept in the dark by the MC being a bit cagy about it all in her thoughts instead.
On top of it all, the entire thing made the MC look weak which didn't fit at all with the personality ascribed to her. It's not that the MC looks spineless because she doesn't fight back, she does. It makes her look weak implicitly because everyone seems to think it's justified to treat her like a stupid, reckless, blond teenager, even though from my perspective she doesn't deserve it at all. How does everyone have such a skewed image of her that they think treating her like that is warranted? God, this aspect of the story is such a huge buzzkill.
A rather minor annoyance that nonetheless grated on my nerves right before the climax were the bickering and unproductive discussions. The author seems to be aware of these issues because the characters constantly remind each other that they are wasting time but that doesn't stop anyone from continuing right after. This went on for quite a while, everyone constantly repeating the same stuff over and over, which got old fast. The steps of the proceedings were endlessly repeated and talked about without making any progress. It all felt like an unnecessary waste of my time especially considering how short the book is in general. I think this would've annoyed me much less if it wasn't so entirely out of character for a tight and fast-paced novella. Why is this book so short if you have time for all these shenanigans?
I will definitively give the series a chance and read the next volume but I have doubts the author can live up to the premise.
Let's see how many of my cliche-o-meter predictions will become true.
