Ruqsana Begum's account of how she rose to become a Muay Thai world champion is only a small part of why her story is such an inspirational one for anyone who has ever followed their dream. Ever since she went to school in Bethnal Green, part of a large local Bangladeshi community, Ruqsana Begum stood apart from her friends because she was so keen on sport. At home, she wore the clothes her mother wanted her to wear and behaved like a dutiful Muslim daughter, but at heart she wanted something different. And when she went to college and saw an advert for a Muay Thai club, she knew what that would be. But she also knew that her parents would never allow her to fight - even if they could have afforded the costs. So she fought in secret, and soon discovered that she was a natural. But when her parents arranged her marriage, her new world collapsed and she found herself unable to cope, until she broke free again, and worked her way to the top.… (meer)

Book 107 of 2020 was ‘Born Fighter’ by Ruqsana Begum, a British boxer and kickboxing champion. I don’t normally go for celebrity bios, especially sporting ones, but this was an engrossing read. It has a really satisfying structure, and Begum’s determination to overcome the obstacles life puts in her way is quite something. She also has a lot to say about what it means to be a Muslim woman in modern Britain, and the importance of her faith shines through. The writing could be better at times, but this doesn’t stop this being an engaging and inspiring read. ( )

How a young woman of Bangladeshi descent from east London became a world champion of Muay Thai, the martial art also known as kickboxing, might easily have been cast as simple rebellion. But this is a much subtler and more interesting story than that as Begum and Shepherd sensitively examine the tensions – her own faith and appreciation of her parents' views, racism and the consequences of a failed arranged marriage – behind Begum's success. A remarkable tale, skilfully told.
