The Case of the Canterfell Codicil- Fitzsimmons Audio performance by Tim Bruce 4 stars Tongue planted firmly in cheek. This was a lot of fun. From the opening sly nod to Piorot and Hastings, the puns and repartee just kept on coming. There’s an original (at least I think it’s original) solution to a locked room murder, an impossible art theft, and an apparrent (but not) suicide. Definitely not to be taken seriously, this was easy listening. A good book to relax with. I’ll be looking at the rest of the series. cozy-mystery, british-humor, british, verbal-humor, situational-humor, local-law-enforcement, locked-room-mystery, audiobook, amateur-sleuth**** Silly fun reminiscent of Wodehouse but better. Anty is just too much fun and the problem solving is so convoluted. The characters are so clearly defined that I wanted to share dad jokes with them and the twisty plot kept me engaged the whole time. Narrator Tim Bruce added to the fun. Best described as a mash-up of Wodehouse and Christie, this novel was mildly amusing at times, but the Wodehouse-inspired parts over-ran the mystery elements too much, so it just ended up being kind of ridiculous and convoluted. Which is fun when one is reading Wodehouse, but Fitzsimmons is no Wodehouse. The too-rare glimpses of genuine humor saved this from a worse rating. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Thereâ??s a literary niche for all tastes including those who think that either Agatha Christie wasnâ??t funny enough or that PG Wodehouse didnâ??t feature anywhere near as many baffling murders as he could have. The Case of the Canterfell Codicil is a classic, cosy, locked-room mystery written in the style of an homage to PG Wodehouse. The result, for those familiar with Wodehouse or Jerome K Jerome and Agatha Christie or Dorothy L Sayers, is either an inexcusable offence to several beloved canons, or a hilarious, fast-paced, manor house murder mystery. In The Case of the Canterfell Codicil, Wodehousian gadabout and clubman Anty Boisjoly takes on his first case when his old Oxford chum and coxswain is facing the gallows, accused of the murder of his wealthy uncle. Not one but two locked-room mysteries later, Boisjolyâ??s pitting his wits and witticisms against a subversive butler, a senile footman, a single-minded detective-inspector, an irascible goat, and the eccentric conventions of the pastoral Sussex countryside to untangle a multi-layered mystery of secret bequests, ancient writs, love triangles, revenge, and a teasing twist in the fina Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

Fun! (Except, perhaps, for the murder victim and the suspects, which included everyone at the house — guests and residents, above and below stairs.) ( )
