Biography & Autobiography. Military. Nonfiction. HTML:

Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, who found himself at the center of a firestorm for his decision to report the infamous phone call that led to presidential impeachment, tells his own story for the first time. Here, Right Matters is a stirring account of Vindman's childhood as an immigrant growing up in New York City, his career in service of his new home on the battlefield and at the White House, and the decisions leading up to, and fallout surrounding, his exposure of President Trump's abuse of power.

0900, Thursday, July 25, 2019: President Trump called Ukraine's President Zelensky, supposedly to congratulate him on his recent victory. In the months that followed, the American public would only learn what happened on that call because Alexander Vindman felt duty-bound to report it up the chain of command: that the President of the United States had extorted a foreign ally to damage a political challenger at home. Vindman's actions and subsequent testimony before congress would lead to Trump's impeachment and affirm Vindman's belief that he had done the right thing in the face of intense pressure to stay silent. But it would come at an enormous cost, straining relationships with colleagues, superiors, and even his own father, and eventually end his decorated career in the US Army, by a Trump administration intent on retribution.

Here, Right Matters is Vindman's proud, passionate, and candid account of his family, his career, and the moment of truth he faced for his nation. As an immigrant, raised by a father who fled the Soviet Union in pursuit of a better life for his children, Vindman learned about respect for truth throughout his education and military service. As this memoir makes clear, his decision to speak up about the July 25th call was never a choice: it was Vindman's duty, as a naturalized citizen and member of the armed forces. In the wake of his testimony, he would endure furious partisan attacks on his record and his loyalty. But far louder was the extraordinary chorus of support from citizens who were collectively intent on reaffirming an abiding American commitment to integrity.

In the face of a sure-fire career derailment and public excoriation, Vindman heeded the lessons from the people and institutions who instilled in him the moral compass and the courage to act decisively. Like so many other American immigrant families, the Vindmans had to learn to build a life from scratch and take big risks to achieve important goals. Here, Right Matters is about the quiet heroes who keep us safe; but, above all, it is a call to arms for those who refuse to let America betray its true self.

It’s nice to get a first-hand account of Alexander Vindman’s back story leading up to his impeachment testimony and beyond but he presented himself as a hero without any flaws. He keeps saying he had no idea about the consequences of his action would be. He leaves out emotionally charged conversations that would must have had with his wife, father, and friends. Those are mentioned by glossed over. He never explains his relationship to Judaism or his faith. And the epilogue is unnecessary. It’s inspirational stuff we’ve heard before. ( )

With a straightforward prose, Alexander Vindman recounts his life that lead to his testimony against president trump regarding his "quid pro quo" phone call with the president of Ukraine. Interesting look into the modern experiences of a career military and his life as the son of a Ukrainian immigrant. ( )

Memoir of the author's immigration experience and his time in the military and foreign service which came to an end when he exposed the attempts by Trump to extort the Ukrainian government.

I moved back and forth between the audiobook and print version, both were compelling narratives.

He offers interesting insights into what the west does not understand about the tensions between Russia and Ukraine and a mind like Putin's. ( )

Great book to use for Ukraine's history. Chapters about the impeachment process, later in the book, are important but to me the foreign service nuggets and insight into culture of Eastern European politics were the best. He shares things like, "Russia without Ukraine is a country. Russia with Ukraine is an empire." My tags for this book are integrity, dedication, and Ukraine. I loved it. He writes well about his service. I especially liked his descriptions of Russian political behavior, and how the culture is to provoke a response; by Russia baffling the adversary, it advances its agenda... while the West is baffled and deters, Russia rolls right in [at the time of this writing, Ukraine is under a horrible siege for a 4th week]. This book explains Putin to me, and more people should read it! Recommended without reservation. ( )

This is an important book and everyone should read it! Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman was a US Army Foreign Area Officer assigned to the White House. He was an expert on Russian, Ukraine and the surrounding area. Vindman was the only person present at a telephone call between the President of the United States and the President of Ukraine who reported the previous Presidents improper actions. The former President of the United States tried to get the President of Ukraine to fabricate damaging evidence against a political opponent. Other high officials in the room tried to ignore the improper actions but Vindman knew that no matter what the cost to himself he had to report it. Most people alive today know that Vindman's action cost him his career in the Army. It also led to the impeachment of the former president and indirectly may have contributed to his loss in the 2020 Presidential election. This book is the author's story of why he did the right thing even though it cost him his career that he loved. ( )

At 9 a.m., Thursday, July 25, 2019, I was seated with a few other White House officials at the long table in one of the two Situation Rooms in the basement of the West Wing.
On the one-year anniversary of President Trump's call with President Zelensky, I reflected on my place in the events that led to his first impeachment. (Epilogue)
