The price of true love is betrayal, suspicion, and murder in a thriller of twisting suspense by the Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Best Friend. James and Jessica Sommers are celebrating their first blissful year together, an unexpected second chance at true love. Unfortunately, their newfound shot at happiness is not without collateral damage. There's Jessica's ex-husband. He pretends for all the world that he's resilient and strong. If only for the sake of their teenage son, profoundly vulnerable in his own way. James's ex has taken a different road. Bitter, vengeful, and threatening, she wants only the worst for the happy couple. And then there's the couple themselves: Are they truly as in love as they seem? When James enters into an extraordinarily profitable, if shady, transaction with a beautiful art dealer, Jessica and James's seemingly perfect marriage takes a dark and tragic turn. Amid suspicions, tested loyalties, revenge, and guilt, no one escapes unscathed from sins committed in the name of love.… (meer)

I expected something different than what this book really was...a legal/crime thriller. It's not my favorite genre, and from the blurb it sounded like domestic suspense, which is definitely more up my alley. Still, I read through the book and finished it.

Overall, I enjoyed it, but I had a few problems with it. It started off interesting, but quickly got jumbled as ALL the characters got introduced, and I felt like I was head-hopping. I had to go back to see if I had missed something. We start off with James and Jessica Sommers celebrating their one-year anniversary. Then it quickly jumps into Wayne (Jessica's ex), Haley (James' ex), Reid (still not 100% sure what the point of his character was), and Owen (Jessica and Wayne's son)'s POVs. Later, we meet a detective once the murder happens, Lieutenant Velasquez.

It starts off with meeting all the characters, then you see that the characters all have a motive, and then the murder happens. After that, it's a hunt to find the killer and bring him/her to justice. It becomes a legal thriller for the second half of the book.

There were a lot of characters and it was a good mystery story. But, there were so many characters to keep track of and I didn't feel a connection with any of them. To me, they weren't well fleshed-out. The climax was a little underwhelming as well - the perpetrator becomes apparent before the final reveal.

Still, interesting story and it was a quick read. ( )

Too many characters and the ending just fizzled out. Very disappointed, was the author in a rush to get the book to the publisher? ( )

I knew this story would be about a horrible marriage because of the title. Nothing's perfect. Jessica and James Sommers both cheated on their spouses to be together. They are now happily married, but not everyone they hurt can forgive and forget. So, when one is murdered, the suspect pool is frothing with possibilities. This book has everything, suspense, intrigue, police procedures, and court drama. It builds nicely, but the end was anticlimactic. I guessed the culprit early on and kept waiting for that big moment when the author throws in the plot twist you never expected, but it never happened. ( )

Nicely twisted---and the ending was a surprise in more ways than just the ending. James was going to have troubles, no matter how his future played out. Mistakes happen as this book showed some examples of where things went wrong....could they have been avoided??? ( )
