"In New York Times bestselling author Rainbow Rowell's Landline, Georgie McCool knows her marriage is in trouble. That it's been in trouble for a long time. She still loves her husband, Neal, and Neal still loves her, deeply -- but that almost seems besides the point now.Maybe that was always besides the point. Two days before they're supposed to visit Neal's family in Omaha for Christmas, Georgie tells Neal that she can't go. She's a TV writer, and something's come up on her show; she has to stay in Los Angeles. She knows that Neal will be upset with her -- Neal is always a little upset with Georgie -- but she doesn't expect to him to pack up the kids and go home without her. When her husband and the kids leave for the airport, Georgie wonders if she's finally done it. If she's ruined everything. That night, Georgie discovers a way to communicate with Neal in the past. It's not time travel, not exactly, but she feels like she's been given an opportunity to fix her marriage before it starts. Is that what she's supposed to do?Or would Georgie and Neal be better off if their marriage never happened?"--… (meer)

so so cute and funny and an absolute dream for nosey bitches who like to psychoanalyze other people’s marriages ( )

I got this one as a surprise from the Book Riot "riot read" subscription service but I would have bought it anyway because I like Rainbow Rowell.

It's a fast read - I finished it in less than 24 hours and I had a full work day in the middle so that tells you something. I had to find out what happened as soon as I could.

I didn't like the wacky premise of the book but I did like where it took me. Reflecting back on the relationship made me think a bit about my own and reading about Georgie & Neal's special moments as a couple made me remember what it feels like to fall in love. Rowell is good at writing quirky sweet moments that feel real. Unfortunately there's a lot here that doesn't feel so real (the writing room, her super weird family, the pug dogs) and that detracted from the book for me.

It's a good quick read but I'm afraid I'm always hoping for another Eleanor & Park and this isn't quite there. ( )

I liked it, but not quite as much as Eleanor & Park and Fangirl. ( )

I did it! I finished a novel during my maternity leave! However, I do not have the mental capacity to review it. ( )

A cute story with the fun twist thanks to the magical phone. I liked that Georgie wasn't a typical California "plastic" mom. Some parts definitely annoyed me but it was a fresh idea and overall pretty good. I found this book via Geek Mom. ( )

What really makes a book of the summer is when we surprise ourselves. It’s not just about being fascinated by a book. It’s about being fascinated by the fact that we’re fascinated.

The odds:4-1
Landline
Rainbow Rowell
Pros: Keen psychological insight, irrepressible humor and a supernatural twist: a woman can call her husband in the past.
Cons: Relative lack of violence, perverse sex.

Neal was easy to stare at.  Maybe not breathtaking; not the way Seth could be…. Neal didn’t take Georgie’s breath away.  Maybe the opposite; but that was okay.  That was really good actually; to be near someone who filled your lungs with air.
