A high-octane tale of sweeping scope and and imagination packed into the pages of a breathless novella. Reminiscent of Jack Vance at his best in its sweep and imagination, but wholly Di Filippo in its execution. Klom is a big, simple man who works in the salvage yards on the planet Asperna as a shipbreaker. One day, while deep in the bowels of an antique ship, Klom discovers an active organic stasis pod. He splits it open and out tumbles a large quadruped that seems friendly, harmless, but non-sapient. Klom adopts it as a pet and names it Tugger. Little does he imagine the deadly danger Tugger represents. Klom is forced into a desperate chase across the stars, encountering many colourful worlds and cultures, as the most powerful beings in the galaxy hunt him down and vie for the secrets he has unwittingly discovered.… (meer)

An enjoyable Vancian SF novella. Big Klom, a gentle innocent, works in a shipbreaker yard and discovers a 'live' stasis bag in a decommissioned section of the spaceship he's working on. In it is a creature, apparently non-sentient, which he adopts as a pet. When it and his companions are killed, he embarks on a mission to rebuild the pet.
Very much an innocent abroad read, with a great deal of gentle whimsy - which doesn't get in the way of the plot. Recommended.

This sci-fi novel is about a big, loveable lug named Klom. He is a shipbreaker. Although this story takes place in the future and the ships are starships, shipbreaking is still done on water and is still a dangerous, low-paying job. While exploring the corridors of one especially ancient and massive ship, Klom finds an alien space dog and adopts it as a loyal pet. He soon learns this is no ordinary alien space dog and is forced to go on the lam. The author uses some impressive vocabulary, both established and invented, to create a universe of diverse technologies and peoples. The story has the pace of Total Recall (and I did imagine Klom to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger). It's a breezy, reasonably fun buddy caper that ends too quickly. ( )

This was quick, light read about a man who finds an unusual object - which turns out to be an animal - in his teardown work on an ancient spaceship. He takes the unique pet home with him, which leads to an interstellar adventure to help the creature, who isn't exactly what it seems. Through this story, Klom, the shipbreaker, begins to develop as a person, from the simple brute he began as. The story had sexual elements, and the ending wasn't exactly perfect, but it was still an enjoyable read. ( )

really enjoyed the heck out of this book, started it...put it down then picked it back up.. Glad I did, it was a well put together story of an underdog who finally came out of continual hair raising adventures. It was a lot of fun and quite different from anything I had read before. I would certainly recommend this. ( )

This science fiction novella from a respected author reminds me very much of adventure stories from the golden age of science fiction, both in style and substance. More plot driven than character oriented, the story gives a light glimpse into a fairly dystopian future. It's well-written and interesting, but the ending fell very flat for me. I'll happily continue reading this author, but this won't be the work of his that I'll recommend to others. ( )
