It really did not wow me and I tired to both phyiscally read it and also finisehd it on audibook. I felt like the book read super slow and the characters did not wow me. I just strugled to feel connected to them. I thought the world was cool and unique but the book while it should have been fast pace, was a super not compeling. I might check out book 2. But this book i stuggled with mostly because i did not like the main character that much. This book just was meh. Charlie Hall has never found a lock she couldn't pick, a book she couldn't steal, or a bad decision she wouldn't make. She's spent half her life working for gloamists, magicians who manipulate shadows to peer into locked rooms, strangle people in their beds, or worse. Gloamists guard their secrets greedily, creating an underground economy of grimoires. And to rob their fellow magicians, they need Charlie. Now, she's trying to distance herself from past mistakes, but going straight isn't easy. Bartending at a dive, she's still entirely too close to the corrupt underbelly of the Berkshires. Not to mention that her sister Posey is desperate for magic, and that her shadowless and possibly soulless boyfriend has been keeping secrets from her. When a terrible figure from her past returns, Charlie descends back into a maelstrom of murder and lies. Determined to survive, she's up against a cast of doppelgñgers, mercurial billionaires, gloamists, and the people she loves best in the world - all trying to steal a secret that will allow them control of the shadow world and more. I’m settling on a solid 3 stars for “Book of Night”. I enjoyed the story a lot. It is an urban fantasy with mystery/heist elements and a very unique take on a darker magic system. Imagine if you took the opening scene of Peter Pan where his shadow is a sentient being, and then turned that into a full length novel and made it dark and gritty. I’m not going higher than a 3 because I think this would have been a painful read for me if I wasn’t listening to the audio book. It’s a thick story in terms of learning character backgrounds and just remembering all the characters. It’s also not very engaging in the way it is written. And it jumps around a little too much for me (I only have 3 brain cells). I liked it, but didn’t love it, and certainly am not obsessed with it.
I listened to the audio book for this one and I think that was a blessing and a curse. It was a blessing in that it helped me actually finish the book (it is a bit slow at times, so I think I would have DNF if I were reading it traditionally—the audio book allowed me to multitask while listening). It was a curse in that it sometimes got confusing with the time jumps to remember if I was hearing about past events or current events, and I’m guilty of zoning out from time to time so I know several things went over my head (example: I know I would understand the magic system/laws better if I had read the text).
Things I liked:
• I liked Vince’s character a lot. I also liked the end of the book. I wish we could have harnessed the action in the last 20% of the book and have had that spread out through the whole book.
Things I was “meh” about:
• Charlie. I believe she is an unlikeable protagonist intentionally, but it wasn’t very enjoyable being in her head.
Things I didn’t like:
• I didn’t love the amount of jumping between past and present times. It felt a bit disorienting.
• The pacing struggled in my opinion too. It took just a little too long for the action to really pick up, and even then, it wavered.
• I also didn’t like learning that this is going to be a series. I could have sworn I remember reading that this was going to be a stand alone story, which was the only reason I picked it up at this time. I’m not sure if I’m going to read book two when it releases. ( )
