I do like Hammond's Cunningham stories (much better than his Calder ones). I think I've read this before, long ago, but I didn't remember whodunnit at all. Cunningham and crew are given a shot dog to look after, and he tries to determine what happened - and stumbles, unwittingly, on a much bigger matter. As so often happens, it's the cover-up that reveals the most. Beth displays her usual intelligence - I don't like know-it-all detectives but she doesn't bother me, not sure why. Good story, the usual rich cast of characters and settings and events. Worth reading and likely rereading - at least, once I've forgotten the conclusion again.
