When I picked up my pre-order at the bookstore I knew I was about to immediately cast off the eight other books I was "currently reading" and dive headlong into this because I need this kind of joy in my life. I don't even know what to say. These books are pure dopamine in a way not even MDZS is. I mean, it lacks the serious aspects of MDZS in that it's not trying to ay much about power, war, reputation (though there is some of that), but it also lacks the seriousness of killing off beloved characters. This is a deeply horny satire of a deeply horny genre of books, and it's glorious buttery popcorn for my brain and I love it. I enjoyed V1 of Scum Villain, but oh boy does V2 knock it out of the park! I read the entire thing straight through in one sitting. V1 ended with Qingqiu "betraying" Binghe - pushing him into the Abyss so he can come into his demonic power. Per the original stallion novel plot, Binghe was supposed to spend five years in the abyss and return for revenge. Only he returns in just 3! Qingqiu has been preparing, but is still terrified. The Binghe he encounters isn't as he is supposed to be: something is off. Qingqiu feels like a mouse being played with by a cat and makes a drastic decision that will alter the course of the story & their relationship drastically. This volume had so many exciting twists, with the characters, with the System and with the romance that I stayed up well past bedtime. Qingqiu wanted to get into the hero's good graces, so he wouldn't die a scum villain death. He wasn't prepared for how that would change the hero. It's now three years after the events that wrapped up volume 1. Based on his knowledge of the original web novel, Shen Qingqiu (SQQ) figures he has another two years to prepare for Luo Binghe's (LBH) return. However, while investigating a mysterious plague, SQQ discovers that LBH has, in fact, somehow come back early. He also understandably feels betrayed by and upset with SQQ. Everything is now out of whack - SQQ's preparations, his understanding of the overall story, his ability to predict how LBH will react and what he'll do. But he figures his best chance for survival involves sticking with his original plan as much as possible. This was technically not my first time reading this part of the story, although my actual first time involved a fan translation. Seven Seas' official release was a much better way to experience this. I had so much fun with this volume that I wanted to immediately jump into volume 3. Alas, I knew it'd be better for me to write a review for volume 2 first. SQQ spends the bulk of this volume clinging to his understanding of the original novel, although there is now quite a bit of evidence that things have changed. As always, one of my favorite things about the humor in this series is the mismatch between SQQ's understanding of what's going on and the reality, which is that he's now in a danmei (BL) novel. He has to get smacked in the face with that reality multiple times before it finally sticks. We don't get much System in this volume, which made me sad, although I suppose System pretty much fulfilled its comedic purpose in volume 1. We do, however, get a lot of one of my other favorite things, which is SQQ mentally freaking out while the rest of him continues to act like the elegant peak lord everyone believes him to be. The Water Prison scene, in particular, was both great for SQQ freakout moments and SQQ story misunderstandings. In addition to the comedy, MXTX managed to work in some genuinely touching moments. One scene made me tear up even though I knew it was going to work out fine. (Although I'll admit that it was slightly less touching when I discovered/was reminded just how much SQQ engineered things. To be fair, he didn't know how devastated poor LBH would become afterward.) Although there were still a few sentences here and there that were a little hard for me to follow, overall I really like this translation. I also appreciated that the translators got to include occasional footnotes about trickier translations, such as the layers of meaning in "Chunshan." I don't feel like I properly communicated my enjoyment of this volume, but now that I've finally squeezed a review out I can start volume 3, and that's all I really want right now. Except I think that's the volume with the Extras: Character, location, name, and pronunciation guides, a glossary, and some character sketches. Also, the volume begins with a couple full-color illustrations. I continue to appreciate the work that Seven Seas has put into these releases. I love that there is an actual drawing featuring Shen Qingqiu in his terrible beard disguise. That was utterly adorable and just... beautiful. I love that it's here. Truly, all the art in this is amazing, and every scene that was illustrated is gorgeous. I love that we get curly Binghe, I love the water prison scene that was chosen for illustration... All of it was amazing.
We finally get some more Moshang, with Mobei-jun picking up and tossing Shang Qinghua, who constantly tried to hide behind the former's thighs.
I also love seeing Liu Qingge's affection and flustered feelings towards Shen Qingqiu, especially near the end, when he demands to know why Shen Qingqiu is throwing himself at another man when Liu Qingge is right there. And the more endearing moment where he says,
I also loved the bits of Zhuzhi-Lang we got in this volume. He's so wonderful, but also quite manipulative and obviously still working for his master, and the way Shen Qingqiu messes up his plans is amazing to watch, though I feel bad for Zhuzhi-Lang, particularly with how Shen Qingqiu left him (though I'm admittedly biased, particularly after reading Zhuzhi-Lang's extras). It's also absolutely adorable how much this volume highlights that Shen Qingqiu is still a fanboy of PIDW at heart, particularly Zhuzhi-Lang's case (filling in a plothole), but also in the way he would read monster manuals on his Peak as "speculative fiction" in his spare time, the way he's excited to see characters in person or go to special locations that are rather normal in the world he's in but that he only knows as book locations. It's just cute, and hilarious when contrasted with his frequent attempts to escape with his life and liberty from all the people after him.
The confrontation with Qiu Huitang is also extra hilarious for some reason now because of how soap opera-ish it feels.
Of course overall there's the relationship between Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe, where the former is completely oblivious until far too late about the true nature of Luo Binghe's care for him, even while sadly reminiscing about his lost "lamb" of a disciple. Luo Binghe's struggles are truly tragic, culminating in dream sequences where he desperately tries to hold on to the object of his affections, and the one where he is ravaging his own dreamspace, self-harming in anger over his failures. The way Shen Qingqiu constantly feels bad for Luo Binghe's poor state and blames himself for everything is heart-breaking, and Luo Binghe's deep sorrow hurts. I love seeing their interactions and the way the world around them badly tries to understand what is going.
As ever, the pronunciation guide still doesn't include IPA. That really needs to be fixed. It should be an easy one. I don't know why it hasn't, and linking to Seven Seas' website is not a solution. This could easily be the work of one person to fix (though it should be more, to check for errors).
Overall, though, an absolutely lovely second book in the series. SVSSS is still my favorite of MXTX's novels, and I cannot wait for volume 3. ( )
