Progress in fundamental particle physics and cosmology continues to be fast enough to necessitate a new, generally accessible book every few years. Dine's volume can fill this need for the early 2020s. Interludes of information on his personal career (he's now at UC Santa Cruz), serve to enhance, rather than interfere with, his exposition of the subject. I thought that his interactions with some of the formulators of string theory and its "landscape" concept were especially interesting to read about. Michael Dine is a theoretical physicist with a lot of enthusiasm about the big questions of the universe, but this is not exactly an accessible book, especially if you listen to the audio version, as I did. He starts out easy, as he travels through the history of the topic, but in the 20th and 21st centuries, the going gets rough. There is doubtless no easy way to summarize cutting edge physics topics, but the author wanted to give it a try. Alas, I am no amateur on the topic, but without equations and illustrations, much of it was impenetrable to me. (JAB) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
"This Way to the Universe is a celebration of the astounding, ongoing scientific investigations that have revealed the nature of reality at its smallest, at its largest, and at the scale of our daily lives. The enigmas that Professor Michael Dine discusses are like landmarks on a fantastic journey to the edge of the universe. Asked where to find out about the Big Bang, Dark Matter, the Higgs boson particle--the long cutting edge of physics right now--Dine had no single book he could recommend. This is his accessible, authoritative, and up-to-date answer. Comprehensible to anyone with a high-school level education, with almost no equations, there is no better author to take you on this amazing odyssey." Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
