Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. Tedious, self-indulgent, self-important, and frankly, boring. The self-importance was a feature, and I felt that there could have been better ways to portray that in a way that didn't make me want to hate the author and his prose. On paper, this should have been a book I loved, but I just hated it. Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. I received this book for free through LibraryThing’s Early Reviewers program.
When the summary for the book said that the narrator/main character was misanthropic, that was an understatement! The concept for the book was engaging, and the story itself, very well-written. I could absolutely feel the disdain and contempt that the narrator would have for me on nearly every page. Unfortunately, for that reason, I couldn't finish it. In a way, it felt like she wouldn't have wanted me, or someone like me, to read such personal details of her life. I felt very uncomfortable about the whole thing. Hopefully, someone else out there will find it all fascinating in a way that I couldn't.Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. I won an advanced proof of this novel from a giveaway on LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review. This novel reads as a semi-textbook, part cocktail recipe, and part wannabe picture book. I absorbed nothing throughout most of the story. I couldn't get engaged due to the style of writing. The narrator was whack and not in a good way. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Meet Vanessa Salomon, a privileged and misanthropic French-American translator hailing from a wealthy Parisian family. Her twin sister is a famous movie star, which Vanessa resents deeply and daily. The only man Vanessa ever loved recently killed himself by jumping off the roof of her building. It's a full life. Vanessa has just started working on an English translation of a titillating, experimental thriller by a dead author when she's offered a more prominent gig: translating the latest book by an Extremely Famous French Writer who is not in any way based on Michel Houellebecq. As soon as she agrees to meet this writer, however, her other, more obscure project begins to fight back--leading Vanessa down into a literary hell of traps and con games and sadism and doppelgangers and mystic visions and strange assignations and, finally, the secret of life itself. Peppered with "sponsored content" providing cocktail recipes utilizing a brand of liquor imported by the film director Steven Soderbergh, and with a cameo from the actress Juno Temple, Bad Eminence is at once an old-school literary satire in the mode of Vladimir Nabokov as well as a jolly thumb in the eyes of contemporary screen-life and digital celebrity. Bad Eminence is written in a very unique style that lends it's self perfectly to the subject matter. Our main character Vanessa is a different kind of woman then you normally read about and I loved every bit of it. She says it like it is and will correct you when you don't say it like it is. There are cocktail recipes, and extensive vocabulary words, French dialogue and sarcasm galore.
Overall I recommend this book for people who love reading. It's really a "you had to read it to understand" kind of book.
