When it comes to Noir fiction, and especially that of the romantic slant, no one writes it better than Bobby Underwood. In the tradition of his own terrific “Costa del Sol” and those classic films, “Dangerous Mission” and “The Second Woman”, Underwood gives us another fine adventure with “Down Mexico Way”.

Private Detective Nick Halliday is fishing his way along the Mexican coast when he decides to take a break and enjoy the comforts of Manzanillo. By chance, (or fate?) he meets the beautiful Selena who he catches pickpocketing another hotel guest. He immediately sees something special in the young woman, despite her current activity, and instead of turning her in, gives her a chance to redeem herself. Soon they are on their first date, as Nick describes:

“All my senses seemed heightened; the moist sea breeze felt fresher on my face; the salty ocean air tasted like it had been laced with sugar; the sun glowed rather than burned; the colors of flowers in bloom were brighter and more beautiful; lazy white clouds drifting across the great expanse of pale blue sky seemed like lily pads for angels to stand on so they could watch couples fall in love.”

As Nick and Selena spend the day together, they grow even closer.

“When she inched closer and looked up at me tenderly, I was encouraged. When she slipped her hand into mine I was on the moon.”

With night encroaching on their wonderful day, they soon discover that a dangerous adventure is upon them, and they will need each other if they are to survive. ( )
