As a Reader’s Digest publication, I don’t suppose anyone would have grandiose expectations for the content of this cookbook; most everyone will assume it will have some solid recipes in it, but nothing utterly fabulous. And that is 100% true.

Off the bat I must point out that—although the title claims this is a plant-based cookbook—it actually isn’t. There are a lot of vegetarian recipes in here, and many more that could be easily adjusted with vegetarian substitutions. However, be advised, there are many recipes that call for meat as principle ingredients---fish, chicken, sausage, venison, beef, etc.: it’s all in here. So, if you are a vegetarian/vegan that would find that kind of content objectionable (especially the photographs) then this is a book you will definitely want to avoid.

I tried three of the recipes in the book before giving up on it.

The Better Than Egg Salad was good, but nothing spectacular; although it was ok, I already have other faux egg salad recipes that my family likes a lot better—no need to keep this one hanging around.

I made the Crunchy Tuna Wraps (with vegan tuna packets); it was actually quite tasty, but way too messy…too messy to consider making again.

The recipe we liked the best was the General Tso’s Cauliflower; the sauce was very spicy and flavorful. But, once again, the final verdict was that the General Tso’s recipes already in my recipe box are better. Even though it was a crowd-pleaser, it wasn’t worth hanging on to.

Overall, the recipes I tried were easy to make and good, but not good enough to make again. If you are new to plant-based eating and don’t mind the meaty content, this may be a starter cookbook you want to consider for straightforward, basic recipes that are highly edible. Seasoned vegetarians with lots of experience and established recipe collections probably already have better options on hand and will want to pass on this title. ( )
