"A pilgrimage-turned-adventure story in pursuit of a pagan mystery on the Camino de Santiago across France and Spain. With three pilgrimages across southern France and northern Spain defining author and anthropologist Beebe Bahrami's single journey on the Camino de Santiago, The Way of the Wild Goose recounts an inner and outer journey full of wild nature, ancient roads and history, quirky pilgrims, wise and humorous locals, and puzzling folklore. It's a compelling tale of quest, initiation, and transformation following the Way of Saint James. The book is also a detective story that reveals an old mystery: Why is the goose associated with the medieval Camino de Santiago, and how did it come to preserve a whole universe of pagan, pre-Christian lore in one innocent symbol? Longtime trekker Bahrami decided to find out, and unknowingly catapulted herself into a true wild goose chase, unearthing a magnetically alive and meaningful long walk on the ancient roads in France and Spain-and a journey into the Self"--… (meer)

As expected in a travel memoir, this book provides insight to hiking the Camino, a large dose of history, and inner thoughts of the author. While it was pleasant to read, it didn't keep my attention. I found the history to be more interesting than the stories of the road and reflections. ( )

As someone who has long been intrigued by the Camino and also by the symbolism of geese/swans and other birds in art and history, I thought this book would be right up my alley, and I wasn't wrong. What a thoughtful memoir. It brought her journey alive for me and gave me lots to think about.

I have friends of friends who have made the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. My husband and I enjoyed hearing aspects of their journey. We then found the movie - The Way - about a man who walked the Camino to honor his son. (Highly recommend!)

When I saw this book, I was excited to read about another pilgrim on this journey. When the book arrived, it was MUCH longer than I had expected. Since I am a person who usually enjoys big thick books, I began reading. I never really could get into it. I'm not really sure why, either.

I did enjoy some of the little homey things, like emailing her family, descriptions of some meals eaten, laundry, and other things that happen daily.

I have not completed this book and may not complete it. Maybe if I keep plugging along at some point, I will finish reading it. When I do, I will come back here and revise my review.

A New Age take on the traditional Catholics pilgrimage route across southern France and northern Spain on the Camino de Santiago – the Way of St. James. Partly travel writing, part spiritual journey, part simply taking adventure where you find it. Not recommended if you are just looking for a how-to guide to Camino de Santiago. ( )

Surprising New Age-infused memoir of travels on a traditionally strongly Christian/Catholic pilgrimage. Mary becomes one with Mother Earth, the Goddess, etc. and leaves the reader wondering what these pilgrimages (there are 3 described in this book) were really for. My copy contained a surprising number of typos, grammatical errors and grammatical awkwardness, and a general lack of strong editing. Since all 3 trips are very similar, I finally gave up after the first 2. Honestly can't recommend! ( )
