I was especially impressed by a few instances of world-building that was obviously added to perpetuate the plot but at the same time fit very naturally into the world.
Not every plot-forcing detail is well crafted though. At times you get a clear impression that the author is just making shit up to get where she wants to.
This book is by all means not flawless and rushes forward so fast that I am pretty sure the details on the sidelines are just a stage set without any depth. But at least this hasn't become apparent so far so I can not criticize it just based on speculation.
The way the plot avoids contradictions and character inconsistencies is by constantly forcing the main cast forwards. They are always in zugzwang and rarely get any choice that the reader can reason about.
But you can use this strategy only for so long before you run out of excuses for outside forces to dictate every action or before the reader simply gets tired of following a feather in a storm around.
I want to be mad about the absolutely brutal cliffhanger but then again it wasn't surprising in the least. I saw almost everything in this book coming from miles away at least in broad strokes. It's just that formulaic.
But even criticizing that feels pointless because most seasoned urban fantasy readers have realized long ago that Leia Stone only writes these formulaic genre books.
And within this category, they are not bad. They are just utterly uninspired. ( )
