Hoar (read 22 Aug 2005) Back in 1989 I read Champ Clark's account of his years in Congress and he mentioned Hoar's book and I finally decided to read it, having much enjoyed the book George Frisbie Hoar and the Half-Breed Republicans which I read 20 Oct 1984. This book is flawed by the inordinate amount of time he spends lauding various political figures of his day--Hoar served in the Senate from Massachusetts from 1877 till his death in 1904. Other than excoriating Ben Butler for a whole chapter, Hoar is too praising, and his behind the scenes views are few, though he does claim to be responsible for Garfield being nominated as President in the 1880 Republican Convention at which he presided by an adroit interruption of Garfield's protest of his being voted for therein. This is an uneven work and at times was not interesting. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
