In the year 1919, Dr. Nakamura Tempu returned to Japan from an intensive study of yoga in India. Combining little-known methods of self-realization and health improvement, an intensive study of martial arts, and a knowledge of Western medicine and psychology, he developed the dynamic yogic art called Shin-shin-toitsu-do. 'the Way of mind and body unification.' Today Japanese yoga-characterized by stretching ang breathing exercises, massage-like healing arts, and autosuggestion techniques-is practiced by many thousands of people to foster concentration an calmness, to build willpower, and to lead healthier and fuller lives.
This book is the first in English devoted to Nakamura Tempu and his teachings. Extensive philosophical backgroung is backed up by simple exercises to reveal the psychophysical principles at the heart of Japanese yoga. Also introduced are distinctive forms of seated and moving meditation, health exercises, stretching routines, and self-healing theories. The reader gradually learns to experience firsthand the extraordinary power of mind and body unification.
People already familar with Indian-style yoga will find in Shin-shin-toitsu-do many concepts and techniques that are new and refreshing. Thanks to Japanese yoga's natural methodology, readers who have never done yoga before will have no trouble getting started. Photographs demonstrate each exercise, movement, and posture. The book also includes a glossary and suggestions for those who seek ongoing practice.
