( ) A beautifully illustrated story about the German folk tale of The Frog Prince by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. A talking frog makes a deal with the princess. The frog holds up his part of their bargain, but the princess is reluctant to follow through with her promise. Her father, the king, tells her that she must keep her promise. She does so reluctantly, but at the end it pays off when the frog becomes a handsome prince. Beautifully illustrated folk tale translated from the original German book. The frog prince is a great yarn with a moral for the ages: "A promise is a promise and it must be kept. A promise to a frog is just as important as a promise to a king." Contrast most fairytales, where the moral is basically eat that witch/wolf/giant before it eats you. Also, as a parent reading aloud, you get to do a frog voice, which is one of the easiest and funnest of animal voices. Grimm, J. (1989). The Frog Prince or Iron Henry (Schroeder, B. Illus.). New York: North-South Books. This version of The Frog Prince is retold by Naomi Lewis and illustrated by Binette Schroeder. The story seems to be fairly similar to the original. The princess loses her golden ball down the well and the frog retrieves it after she promises him anything he wants. She does not follow through with her promise until the frog shows up at the castle and her father orders her to fulfill the promise. The illustrations are very whimsical and fit the fantasy story well. A cute tale that teaches readers to have integrity and to always fulfill your promises. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
