A Red Riding Hood feel to the story, this is an endearing twist to fairy tales. There are various characters whose names have changed and have since changed before the start of the story. It therefore helps to read book 1.

The not-so-good fairy godmother’s exploits continue in this short sequel, twisted fairy-tale adventure. This story doesn’t fall entirely into one particular fairy-tale retelling, but one of the main themes is a take on Beauty and the Beast, following young Donella who just wants to find a good life for herself, and an old Prince who is cursed until he can learn to love others more than money. There’s also a goblin king, petty and pretty princes, and a casual dragon. I think it could work as a standalone, although I enjoyed the returning characters and the larger developing story. The authorial fairy-tale narration continues to be the story’s strength, delivering lots of details at a quick pace and with a quirky, old-timey voice.

**Thanks to LibraryThing and the Author for the book for review**

Like its predecessor, The Demi-Wolf and the Hunter is an engaging fairy tale retelling of Beauty and the Beast with several twists and additional influences. The Shakespearean thread is less strong in this one, but that's not a drawback, unless the reader really does want a Macbeth retelling (which this isn't, particularly). That the April/October relationship becomes parental is a nice adjustment, even if it's still a bit awkward, and I appreciated the complexity of Ella's gift/curse, where other fairy tale retellings have sometimes glorified revenge without exploring how becoming an instrument of vengeance has emotional and practical downsides. The plot(s) and resolution(s) are at once somewhat too tidy and rather convoluted, but on the whole, I really did enjoy this story and would be interested in reading the next installment.

As hounds and greyhounds, mongrels, spaniels, curs,
Shoughs, water-rugs, and demi-wolves are clept
All by the name of dogs. The valued file
Distinguishes the swift, the slow, the subtle,
The housekeeper, the hunter, every one
According to the gift which bounteous nature
Hath in him closed; whereby he does receive
Particular addition, from the bill
That writes them all alike. And so of men.

--Shakespeare, Macbeth, Act 3, Scene 1
