Mae Jemison by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara explores the life of this extremely intelligent woman. By age 20, Jemison was already in medical school. She put her training to good use with the Peace Corps. Once her stint with them was over, Jemison decided to make a childhood dream come true. She applied to and was accepted into NASA's astronaut program. In 1992, Jemison became the first black woman in space! The end of the book contains a more detailed look at Jemison's life, using language suited for much older readers. Inspirational and educational both, this entire series is great! I read this with my cubs. We love this series! Highly recommended! ***Many thanks to the Netgalley & Quarto Publishing for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. May Jemison was the first black female astronaut for the US. When she was younger, she was told her dreams were too hard to attain, and she decided to prove everyone wrong. She was a star student, a medical doctor, and eventually an astronaut. She continues to help others achieve their dreams now that she saw some of hers. I love that this book shows how important education is, and that you can do and be anything no matter who you start out as in life. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

"When Mae Jemison was a little girl, she dreamed of blasting off into space on a rocket ship. She was so excited as she watched the Apollo Moon landings, but she wondered... why none of the astronauts were women? Mae loved science and was so bright that she started college at just 16, and was training to be a doctor by the age of 20. She joined the Peace Corps, using her medical knowledge to help people in countries all around the world. Upon returning to the United States, she was accepted into NASA's astronaut program. After hard work and training, in 1992 Mae became the first Black woman to travel into space! This inspiring book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the groundbreaking astronaut's life." Perfectly fine. I like this series much better than the similar “I Am…” series, because the stories are shorter, more straightforward, and don’t have a weird adult narrator. The focus of the subject’s accomplishments is on the dreams they had as kids, not on them being particularly special people, which is nice. The art is lovely, and each book has a different artist, usually from the same background as the biography subject, so they each have a different style. (
