A Picture Book of John Hancock is a picture book biography of the life of John Hancock. It tells about his life and what he did for America. He always stood up for what he thought was right and helped people in tough situations. Overall i think this book was very lengthy but it is a good book for those who are learning about the Declaration of Independence. The book is also very informative and great for kids. ( ) I would use this book in a third lr fourth grade class when talking about the Declaration of Independence in history.this book would make one of the contributors more real to the students and help them understand that the people who signed it were real people. I would use this and then have my students think pair share about things they learned from the book about John Hancock. David A. Adler and Michael S. Adler, along with Ronald Himler bring us another one of their history series, A Picture Book, with 'A Picture Book of John Hancock.' Like all other of the picture books in their series, this focuses on one individual who made a difference that affected our world. Born on January 12, 1737, readers learn about John Hancock'; the kind of person he was at childhood, and the person he became when he was older. We read how Hancock always stood up for those in a messed up position. Despite having inherited a large amount of wealth from his the passing of his uncle, he saw the laws that the British Parliament had been forcing on the colonies was unfair. John Hancock saw the unjust taxes, like the Stamp and Townshend Acts that started in 1765. The parliament had been forcing the people to pay and they were against it and Britain. The Adlers make sure to include in their picture book, the Boston Tea Party along with other influential moments during these events. Hancock joined the First Continental Congress as a delegate in Philadelphia who talked about independence. The Adlers tell readers how for years Hancock helped fight against these laws and fought for the right to govern themselves, away from King George III and the British control. King George III was so trouble by him he sent his men to arrest him along with anyone else stirring up trouble. John Hancock, elected president of the Second Continental Congress in May of 1775, helped the cause alongside general of the Continental army, George Washington, fight against the British army. The colonies declared independence and John Hancock was the first to sign the draft, on July 4th, 1776, called The Declaration of Independence. A Picture Book of John Hancock is pretty lengthy, but informative due to the author's interest to include as much about John Hancock as possible. I believe this book would capture children's interest if they want to learn more about the history of the United States and its independence. Overall, children can learn that it's okay to stand for something like John Hancock and other fellow patriots. Personally, I thought the book was pretty lengthy. In a classroom, I would either leave this book out for children to pick up or I would read half of it at a time. Although, it was very informative and the picture made it not a complete snore. It included important dates on the back as well which I think is really important in history novels for children. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
