Irene and Stuart will try to mend marriage, Bertie goes to camp, Big Lou marries and Bruce stays in a monastery after having been struck by lightening Another wonderful installment of "44 Scotland Street". From the very first page here - I am in full agreement with McCall Smith in his ruminations about life and its vicissitudes! Through Domenica he probes "tolerance"; he "explains" glances between two people who live together - so true!... And in general, he reads our mind on so many issues - except that he phrases it all in such an appealing humane way, indicative only of his masterful touch. Two unfathomable "breakthroughs'' - in the case of Bruce Anderson and in the case of Irene, two unpredictable transformations... And many more happenings with the other characters - subtle nudging, humorous descriptions - all full of his compassion, understanding of human folly and "just life". Another gem in McCall Smith's 44 Scotland Street series with large steps for Big Lou and Fat Bob; surprising movement for Stuart and Irene, but little progress for Bertie, and the remaining characters. Poor Bertie never seems to escape his nemesis Olive, a younger version of his mother Irene. Unfortunately the many historical references to Scotland went right over my head. Lots of morality and love. Compelling, fun and intelligent read. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Onderdeel van de reeks(en)44 Scotland Street (16)
"It's the most anticipated event of the decade -- Big Lou and Fat Bob's wedding -- and everyone is invited! But the relative peace and tranquillity of 44 Scotland Street is about to be disrupted. Domineering Irene is set to return for a two-month stay, consigning young Bertie to a summer camp. Not content with that, she somehow manages to come between the enigmatic nun, Sister Maria-Fiore dei Fiori di Montagna, and her friend, the hagiographer, Antonia Collie. And can a person really change, even after being struck by lightning? Bruce Anderson's metamorphosis and new-found outlook on life is put to the test as he prepares to leave his creature comforts for the monastic simplicity of Pluscarden Abbey. His house sitter, meanwhile, gets a little too comfortable in his new life and discovers that his talented employer's shoes are all too easy to slip into. With great taste comes great responsibility."-- Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
