A conservation-organisation history done right; it goers back 200 years to the Māori history of the site, and gives a good biography of each of the heads of ŌTari, from Cockayne to Brockie to Mole. Luckily Brockie's son Bob is still alive and was able to contribute memories as well as sketches and watercolours. Chris Coad's photos throughout are superb, and Dawson meticulously covers things like the building and relocation of bridges andf rock gardens, as well as tabulating all the different names Ōtari has gone by over the years—a Wikipedian's dream. ''O?tari" tells the story of O?tari-Wilton's Bush, the only botanic garden dedicated solely to the collection and conservation of the plants unique to Aotearoa New Zealand and a native bush reserve with over a hundred hectares of regenerating forest, including some of Wellington's oldest trees. It begins with the Nga?ti Tama gardens in the area from the 1820s, and settler family the Wiltons, who protected acres of native bush for the community to enjoy, and then follows the evolution of the land into a plant museum under leading plant ecologist Leonard Cockayne and Wellington's first Director of Parks and Reserves, John Gretton MacKenzie''--Back cover.
