HTML:A Best of the Month Pick from: Amazon · Apple · LibraryReads Childhood enemies discover the fine line between love and loathing in this heartfelt reimagining of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Katerina Wilmot and Christopher Petruchio shared backyards as kids, but as adults they won’t even share the same hemisphere. That is, until Kate makes a rare visit home, and their fiery animosity rekindles into a raging inferno. Despite their friends’ and families' pleas for peace, Christopher is unconvinced Kate would willingly douse the flames of their enmity. But when a drunken Kate confesses she’s only been hostile because she thought he hated her, Christopher vows to make peace with Kate once and for all. Tempting as it is to be swept away by her nemesis-turned-gentleman, Kate isn’t sure she can trust his charming good-guy act. When Christopher’s persistence and Kate’s curiosity lead to an impassioned kiss, they realize “peace” is the last thing that will ever be possible between them. As desire gives way to deeper feelings, Kate and Christopher must decide if it’s truly better to hate than to never risk their hearts—or if they already gave them away long ago. This book is billed as being based on The Taming of the Shrew, but I felt a stronger allegiance to a movie that was based on TotS, 10 Things I Hate About You. Both the play and the movie are favorites of mine (I adore Shakespeare when he goes tongue in cheek and I adore Heath Ledger when he sings and dances to Tom Jones.) I was predisposed to like this, and mostly it was a pleasant read, but the creepily too-perfect man thing was off-putting to me in this book as it was in the first in the series Two Wrongs Make a Right. Liese's women are impossible and the men just want to stand there and be kicked in the teeth by them. I get that everyone has a story, but it is not healthy to fall in love with people who treat you like crap and it takes the fun out of things. A bit testy is one thing, but there are limits. Both women turned corners and became good partners, but that made it more unbelievable rather than more relatable. Dreamy Prince Charming is hot - The Giving Tree is not. Another issue -- Kate has 10 orgasms in one night. First, I am pretty sure she would have required hospitalization for that at some point. Second, it was her first time having vaginal sex and ... well no, that could not happen. (If anyone has evidence to the contrary keep it to yourself as it will only make me feel inadequate.) Third, Christopher was so patient with Kate that the most detailed and pivotal sex scene went on for chapters -- I actually dozed off I got so bored and then did not come back to the book for 3 days. That is not good.
So it was pleasant, but not for me. I do want to acknowledge that I appreciate Liese's characters having personal challenges. Kate has ADHD and Christopher has migraines and anxiety. As a person with ADHD and chronic sometimes crippling migraines, I was pleased to see an authentic representation of both. ( )
