In 1870 London, the body of a postal clerk is found inside a pneumatic railway car, and surgeon Samson Light has been accused. Tommy Jones must abandon his many jobs to pursue the witness who can exonerate his former tutor. Inspector Morgan of St Giles Station seems unusually reluctant to pursue the case, so Samson's barrister, wife, and friends must investigate. Clues lead to the General Post Office, the London Pneumatic Despatch Company, the highest realms of the Foreign Office, and inside Clerkenwell Gaol itself. Why was an ordinary clerk killed and, if it wasn't Samson who did it, who did? This is the third Tommy Jones Mystery, after Murder at Old St. Thomas's and Murder at an Exhibition. All have some interconnected characters but a stand-alone story.… (meer)

This was interesting - my first win of a sequel to a previous win. Murder on the Pneumatic Railway by Lisa M. Lane is the third in her Tommy Jones Mysteries series, but I believe it works on its own. Like the first, Murder at Old St. Thomas’s, it is a well-done mix of Victorian Era history and mystery with an appealing cast of characters. While continuing to illuminate the status of women at that time, there is also much to learn here about advancements in medicine and technology (the pneumatic railway and mining conditions, in particular.)
When I finished the first book, I was surprised to learn that Tommy would be the focus of the series. I am pleased with the way the author is developing his character, believably and at a reasonable pace. I will definitely read the second book in the series and look forward to future installments – even if the LibraryThing algorithm isn’t kind enough to send them my way. ( )

Recently, While on a cruise, I had the leisure to read Lisa M. Lane's "Murder on the Pneumatic Railway". As a Fan of PBS Masterpiece theatre, this Victorian era Murder mystery sounded right up my alley. Lane took me to the familiar streets of Victorian London and further afield to the country town of Durham, weaving an interesting tale that combined the emerging technology of the industrial age, the gender and social barriers of the Victorian era and a well written mystery featuring plenty of unexpected twists and turns. The cast is believable and likable with a bit of graft and romance thrown in with some fine detective work. Some may think the plot to be overly simple, but I found it to be simply very readable. The pace of the story kept my attention and was a perfect, relaxing summer read. I look forward to reading more of the likable Tommy Jones.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
I liked this book, and learned a lot about the pneumatic Railway in England. Reading this book prompted me to go to Wikipedia in order to learn more. To me, that is a good sign. But it is also a bad sign that the author did not provide enough information about pneumatics to inform me, the reader.
The basic story that revolved around the railway was basically kind of thin. The characters were not developed very well. I seemed to know as much about Sally, the child, as I did about Tommy Jones. The book was choppy and did not transition easily from one subject to another.
But what I was most disappointed with was finding out at the end that this book was the third book in a trilogy. I could tell while reading that this book would make a good trilogy, but I thought this would've been the first book, not the last. Not for me. But it was an okay cozy mystery, if you like that sort of thing. ( )

This feels like a "Dickens" with a good mix of actors all carefully introduced. Some good maps are included which is always helpful with novels of this style. Overall an engaging and certainly not a 'light' read! This is well written with substantial chapters but sectioned into the different threads of the story. The author also weaves in accurate historical facts and people into the story in quite a seamless way. The area of London in which much of the narrative is set will be familiar to many residents and commuters which all help to transport you to a different time. Highly Recommend. ( )

The book is a good read and the author has her historical facts right. I like that.
The book is indeed what the cover says: a cosy crime.
I liked the main subjects very much and I will certainly read her two earlier books. ( )
