Biography of Australian whaling captain William Chamberlain, written in novel format. Chamberlain survived an attack by pirates off the west coast of Africa, and was rescued in 1816 by the Royal Navy when he was 12 years old. He subsequently fought as a powder-monkey in the Battle of Algiers, before being repatriated home. Includes notes on sources. Whaling was a huge industry in the nineteenth century. The blubber of the whale was rendered to oil to burn for lighting throughout the industrialised world.
