This is a good primer for talking about STEAM topics with young children, particularly preschoolers and young elementary school-age students. Many folks might not think of baking as science, but it absolutely is, as so precisely detailed here. There were times the text was a teensy bit clunky in describing every step by step of the baking process, but it makes sense with the point being made. This is interspersed with other fun bits, like dogs playing pin the tail on the cat and other party games.

The illustrations are bright and cheery; they also show a diverse group of kids. Backmatter includes a glossary, a slightly deeper look at the concepts of mixing and measuring, and of course, a recipe for making cupcakes! ( )
