Michigan's sunset coast turns deadly when a group of vacationers encounter a dying author who sees the ghosts of children. When Arnie refuses surgery for his bum knee, Laurel takes the family on a relaxing trip to the beautiful sunset coast on Lake Michigan to recuperate. Accompanying them are Arnie's sixteen-year-old son, Sawyer, and things are made even better when their close friends Claire and Charles join them for a visit. The area is known for sand dunes, white beaches, and swimming. An odd manifestation of bioluminescence-floating lights on the lake-creates an eerie prediction of things to come. One that Sawyer jokingly points out because anytime his parents and their friends get together, disaster strikes. But this time it's Sawyer's girlfriend who proves to be the catalyst for trouble when she takes a job at Dune House as a live-in scribe for Maeve, a dying author who sees the ghosts of dead children. When Felicity mysteriously disappears, and then others follow, it's apparent that Sawyer's prediction has come true: trouble has come to Lake Michigan. Following forensic botany clues, Arnie and the remaining group desperately search for the others and walk right into danger. Will Arnie find everyone in time? What mysteries does the Dune House hold? Find this out and more in Sugar Sands, Deb Davies's latest Coast-to-Coast Michigan Mystery. Rich in Michigan's local flavor, beauty, and culture, Deb Davies brings that true "up north feeling" into her writing.… (meer)

Sugar Sands (of the Michigan Coast to Coast Mystery series) is written by Deb Davies. Sugar Sands is set against the backdrop of Lake Michigan's beautiful sunset coast with a group of friends on a leisurely getaway. The book centers around the group who find their relaxing getaway turning into a nightmarish adventure when they meet an ailing writer who's haunted by the apparitions of children. When individuals begin mysteriously vanishing, the vacationers are thrust into a desperate search against the clock to uncover the missing people before time runs out. This novel weaves together a tale of mystery, with regional flair and the unexpected dark side of a summer retreat. I found it was a slow starter for me but I eventually caught on to the conversation and the story started to evolve into an interesting read that I liked. This book is number three in a series but each can be read as standalones. For those in pursuit of a decent mystery story enriched with the essence of Michigan's charm, 'Sugar Sands' is a good read. Thank you to the author and LibraryThing for my copy to review.

What can I say? I received this book free from LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review. I assume this book was self-published as I cannot imagine it getting past an editor. The beginning is a jumbled, incoherent conversation between people who have not even been properly introduced. Oh sorry.....was I supposed to read some previous books first so I'd know who they were and what the heck they are talking about? I was about to abandon this book, which is something I seldom do, but suddenly, in chapter six, a story began and it caught my interest. Then the perfectly normal story became supernatural. That was okay, but then things got weirder. I don't think this author likes men as there is not one normal one in this entire book. Even the one that seems the most normal goes completely off the rails before this story ends. And though all the loose ends get neatly tied up, the weird conversations come back at the end. Weirder than ever, I must say. Sorry, but I can't recommend this one. ( )

This book starts out with a long conversation that I think may make no sense unless you have read some of Deb Davies previous books. It was a total mess trying to figure out the multitude of characters being discussed in the first chapter and the chapter was one very long conversation. There was a nice defense of the Pit Bull dog breed with which I totally agree but putting it in the beginning of the book with this endless conversation is not the way to get me interested in meat of the story. There was simply no atmosphere, just endless chatter. ( )

Sugar sands by Deb Davies.

This is a not-so-cozy mystery as a follow up to the author's previous novels Northern Lights and White Nights. I haven't read her previous books, but it would have been helpful, as she refers to them quite often.

I enjoyed the setting at Michigan's coastline, I could sense the author's love for this location and usually like stories that can transport me to another place.

Otherwise, as I started reading, I felt a bit thrown into the dialogs and was confused to what was happening. The writing style was much stronger in the middle of the novel, but the plot was somewhat bizarre. The style changed from funny to adventurous to supernatural to even horror. This mystery tried to be to much at once.

Thank you BHC Press for sending me this ebook for my early review.. All opinions are my own. ( )

I received a review copy through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers.

I struggled initially following the conversations between the different characters at the beginning of the book and who they are. There is a lot of dialogue and it's not quite obvious who's saying what. The reader must follow the conversation and dialogue early one to keep up with the storyline. I eventually pushed through that hurdle.

The setting is supposedly in Michigan. While I've never been there, I failed at becoming immersed into the setting and fully captivated until several chapters in where gets better. I do appreciate the attempt at integrating some real-world things (examples include: Abesbooks, GoodReads, Medicaid, googled).

Overall, the book reads a bit slow for me and I struggled to stay mentally engaged throughout. The writing does get better after the first chapter. ( )
