Absolute go to reference -- but do work through each step and try it rather than reading. It makes beautiful sense if you do the steps and is a little confusing if you just try to read.

This is the one that most local needlework shops teach hardanger embroidery from (including my now defunct LNS, The Finishing Touch, Louisville, Kentucky -- the classes that Delfi taught).

There's also a followup book to checkout with surprisingly easy patterns despite how "fancywork" the finished project photos are --

Actually, these two books, the animated stitch diagrams at The Victoria Sampler website, and the "Take The Hard Out of Hardanger" DVD (or a real class and best/easiest/no-fail method to do the picots) from Julie Norton are what I would suggest to anyone learning or already enjoying! ( )
