"Owly and Wormy love making new friends, and when they spot an unfamiliar animal flying through the trees, they can't wait to meet her! A charming and gentle graphic novel for younger readers. Uses simple language and image icons to show the animals and friends communicating. In this third instalment is centred around fear - of trusting new friends, and learning to fly. ( )

Very cute. Why was there so much drama for this little book lol? Owly and Wormy meet a new friend, a flying squirrel, but, unfortunately, the friend is deathly afraid of owls.

This cute comic covers good lessons like giving people a chance, not being afraid to try again, and doing things a different method. ( )

This book is a VERY easy read, as it has little to no words but still tells the touching story of a little owl gaining the confidence to fly and going out of his comfort zone and gaining some new friends a long the way! I would use this book as an introduction to graphic novels because I think it does a good job at showing the layout of a graphic novel, but it does not have a lot of words so it would not be overwhelming to students who are seeing this type of book for the first time! I think this book would also help students see that sometimes, even though it is scary, we need to step out of our comfort zone in order to grow. ( )

Owly is just a pictured book it does not have any words . The pictures in the book are quite interesting. Owly is just a sweet owl trying to learn something new . From the pictures in the owly is very creative. This is and a book that I would let second graders read. I enjoy looking at all of the different picture in the book. It really made me think

In Flying Lessons, Owly and his friend Wormy want to befriend another creature of the forest.-a squirrel. But there is one problem, flying squirrels are afraid of owls. Owly's friend, Wormy, tries to convince the squirrel that Owly is a kind hearted owl, and that he has nothing to worry about. Unfortunately, the squirrel does not hold to much faith in Wormy's word; he likes Wormy tremendously, however, and takes him on the night ride of his life. When morning rolls around the squirrel becomes sleepy and falls asleep. Leaving Wormy stuck in the tree, and Owly, who failed his flying lessons, has no idea how he is going to save his friend. So Wormy jumps, and when hes does, he hurts himself and it upsets Owly. The squirrel sees how much Wormy's fall has impacted Owly and reconsiders his assumptions that he made about Owly. When it comes to how educators can use this book for developing literacy, I would say that it is one that teaches the use of expression. Learning to write with expression is crucial for students as they begin the writing process ,so that they can learn the essential components when it comes to develop a voice in their writing. ( )

In the latest volume, Flying Lessons, Runton’s pictographic language has developed, becoming more complex in the concepts expressed, yet staying as easy-to-read as ever.
