Can't do it. Took a break at p. 120 for dinner, couldn't bear to pick it up again. I wanted to love it, but no. Tedious.
I think a reader has to like the narrator in philosophical travelogues and books like that. I can't say I dislike Herzog (certainly not as much as I dislike Bryson), but I'm just not getting to know him at all. This despite his sharing of random musings. A gimmick does not make a coherent set of essays.
Pride, for example, is a dying hamlet named after a Mr. Pride. The interviewee of that chapter does not admit to ever noticing the meaning of the name of the town. Most of the towns, in fact, are very small. But I've not seen any notice made of that pattern - even though it would be more revealing than some of the other history Herzog dredges up.
