Sammy's mom is a normal mom and then the doctors tell her she has cancer, she loses her hair, gets sick and goes to the hospital for surgery. Sammy tries to make her feel better and help her work out, eventually Sammy's mom is back out of bed and as good as new! This book is about a boy named Sammy and his mother has cancer. Sammy's mother and father tired to help sammy understand what his mother will be going through. Personal Ideas I really enjoyed reading this book. It remind me what I was going through when my mother had cancer. I will say it was so hard for me dealing with the fact that my mom was so sick from chemo it hurt me seeing her like this and not understanding what cancer really was at the time. I didn't realize that their were books out there to help kids understand if their parent was dealing with cancer. I wish that I was able to read a book to help me when I was younger. Extension Ideas 1. Talk with the students what is cancer and how do we get it. 2. Have the students make a get well cards for people that are in the hospital. In this short book it is about a little boy named Sammy. His mommy and daddy go to the doctor one day and they tell his mom that she has cancer. After a period of treatment and surgies she goes back and they tell her it is gone. I thought this story is a cute story. It tells a child the steps of cancer and how they need rest to heal. It also tells what can happen while they are going through treatment like loosing hair to being weak. In the classroom if I had a student hows parent had cancer I would read this story to them and we would discuss this. This would be a good book to read during cancer week at school to the students. A simple but straight-forward account of daily life for Sammy and his family after his mom is diagnosed with breast cancer-- the fear and sadness of the diagnosis, the age-appropriate explanation of cancer and chemotherapy, the reality of hair loss and other side effects, the joys of shrinking tumors and of maintaining family life while living with the disease. Kohlenberg, a breast cancer survivor, states her goal was to write a book to help parents help their children and she succeeds brilliantly with this realistic but positive and very well crafted work. Crow's illustrations enhance the text, lending a warm and comforting feel. Includes a (now dated) list of cancer related resources, as well as additional questions and activities to help children deal with a cancer diagnosis. Bibliotherapy at its best. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
