Op dit moment geen Discussie gesprekken over dit boek. ![]() ![]() The writing is horrendous, one destination is much the same as another, and the author is on one big pity trip after another, I almost gave up after the first two chapters, but I persevered and found a story that I almost wanted to read. I think every girl wants to get in a car and just travel and I found that intriguing, but the continuous whining, drinking, partying, and spending of money killed any interest that I might have had in this book. Meh. Clare quits her job and flies to America with her 19-year-old cat Claudius to drive across the country. At times she alludes to being on a spiritual quest to deal with her mother's death, but these passages are infrequent and not very reflective, so this ends up being just a travel memoir with a cat. She makes some very dumb decisions and there are of course humourous scenes where she can't understand the Southern American accent and they can't understand her British one. Oh, and the cat talks too (but only Clare can hear him). Vaguely humourous, a bit of interesting American history, but Clare isn't particularly like-able or sympathetic, so the book isn't great. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Onderdeel van de reeks(en)I and Claudius (book 1)
It was an unpredictable road trip. From celebrity pet hair stylists in New York to brown bears in the Appalachians, from astronauts in Nashville to Elvis's shag ceiling in Graceland to voodoo snakes in New Orleans, the unlikely couple just about kept their Guccis intact and even learnt to read a map. That was before riding with psychic cowboys in Texas, losing vital body parts in the Grand Canyon, gambling with hoods in Vegas and spilling drinks over film stars in Hollywood. A surreal mix of Amelia Earhart and Betty Blue, Clare learned to let go of the past and of the future. A compelling concoction of the Sphinx and Elsa the Lioness, Claudius learnt to love Kentucky Fried Chicken and to snore at speeds of 90mph. This is a book about an intrepid young woman in pursuit of a dream and the insane love she feels for her remarkable cat. It is a bold and hilarious adventure and it will enchant armchair travellers and cat-lovers as well as those who wish they could do the same. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
