The dog has traditionally been considered, at least in certain times and places, as an impure and despicable being, and even as the vilest of creatures in the context of the Abrahamic religions. However, the Sufis, partly as a reaction to this injustice and partly as heirs of the Iranian religions, in which the dog was considered an almost sacred animal, endeavored to show that it possessed virtues that many humans lacked. They especially valued the poverty and the neediness of the dog, considering themselves as the dogs of the neighborhood of the Beloved. The passages contained in the book have been extracted from the classical literature of Persian love sufism and illustrate the kind of encounters that the great Sufi masters had with dogs.
