This is a reprint of a Hebrew alphabet book, with English translation provided on the bottom half of the page. One page contains a sample of exquisite writing (generally a poem), while the opposing page has a beautiful illustration of the word beginning with said letter. In the elegant border around the illustration is an example of the letter in cursive. The poems are generally longer and more complex than a young primary student could accomodate, but I think any secondary students and most fifth graders could handle and enjoy the poems. The poems and illustrations provide a vignette of life in 1920's Berlin, when the book was originally written. The first page of the book contains a poem that I assume is an alphabet song. As a field guide to Hebrew writing, and as an aid to learning the language, I highly recommend it. Some poems are short and some are long, so they provide practice at different levels of skill. The font used is very clear, which many books using a foreign alphabet fail to use. The only problems I have with the book are its lack of pagination and table of contents (though not mortal sins for an alphabet book) and its lack of explanation of the sounds of the letters or any grammatical information about the language. I'm sure some knowledge of the language is required to enjoy this book, so this is not a terrible problem either, but this will prevent me from giving the book five stars.
