Endelman (read 3 May 1990) This is a study of what the author calls "radical assimilation" of Jews in England from 1656 to 1945. It studies the different waves of Jewish immigration to England and what happened to the immigrants as Jews. Increasingly they became less Jewish--some were baptized, some simply paid less attention to their religion. It was not a surprising story--in fact it seems quite obvious, and some might wonder how a whole book could be written on the subject. There are less than a half million Jews in England, and they are declining. This book was not without interest--dealing with a topic far from my usual interests.
