"Stand Tall, Able Lincoln" is a biography on the life of Abraham Lincoln. This story takes readers through his life from the year 1809, when Abe Lincoln was born, his childhood as a student in school, the death of his mother when he was 9 years old, his young adulthood working many jobs as a store clerk, postmaster, lawyer, etc., and to eventually becoming the 16th president of the United States. I would recommend this book for grades 3-5, because of the length, amount of words per page, the vocabulary, and the fact that it is still a picture book. ( )

Stand Tall, Abe Lincoln by Judith St. George is a bibliography about the 16th President of the United States. This story takes place from the time Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 through his days of learning to read and going to school. He was born into a poor family and became a riverman, then a store clerk, postmaster, a surveyor, and a lawyer. He kept on learning and succeeding and eventually became our 16th President of the United States. Abraham Lincoln is my favorite president because he lived by his saying "If you do something, do it well". This book is an excellent book for people of all ages to inspire them to read and do things well and to the best of their ability. ( )

For this book, I would use it in a second or third-grade classroom as a read aloud. The students would write their own biography of their life up to the point they are at in third grade. This is a creative way for students to get information from their parents about events they may not remember and describe themselves.

I would use this book for a 3rd-5th grade class as a group reading book. It is a longer picture book so I would stay away from a read aloud and have the students read it together in a group instead. I like this book for a 4th grade class to talk about conflict in a story and possible solutions to overcome the problem. I would have the students read the first half and stop where the main problem is introduced and talk about the conflict and solutions that could possibly be a part of the story. This also works on making predictions and educated guesses based off of a text and context they already read in the first part of the book. I would have them then read the second part and discuss what actually happened and if their predictions were close or not. In a 5th grade class I would use this to connect with a history lesson since they are learning American history that year. I like this book to use as a comparison text to another book or story about Abe Lincoln. Since this book is about his early life it might be a good book to start off a lesson with and expand a student's background knowledge. I would have the students read this book and compare it to another book about Lincoln as an adult and discuss similar and different characteristics they see between the young and old Lincoln.

This book is fairly easy to read and I think it would do really well in a 5th grade classroom. After reading this book aloud to the class, I would do a creative writing activity in which each student write a story about themselves. Starting first with the truth about their past and then an idea of what their future could be like. This would go really well along with a lesson about biographies as well as getting students to think about their goals they would like to accomplish in their future. Another option for this lesson would be to have students read this book individually and discuss how the illustrations add to key details to the story.
