A collection of five simple short stories about life for some aboriginal children living in the Kakadu area. These are separate stories about the daily lives of the children as they undertake different tasks. They are shown developing their independence but using knowledge that has been given to them by their parents and other family members. Underlying the stories is a sense of the area, especially the animals - snakes, crocodiles, dingoes, crabs. They also express the respect the author has for the environment as a whole.
There is a story about 10 year old Burrki who, missing his parents, walked from his grandparents to where his parents were visiting other relatives on the coast. It took him four days without a map and he had to find food and shelter along the way.
Mardjibi has the rather frightening experience of a helicopter ride from her remote home to Darwin when her father has to go to hospital. Her first experiences of automatic doors and the ocean are amusing but understandable.
There is also the story of Sammy (called Brolga) whose family spend weekends camping away from the settlement. At one point Sammy(Brolga) and his friend Jimmy are going to fish but see a big black crocodile swimming up and down the river. They are not told to leave the area. The advice the dad gives is to continue fishing as long as they could see the crocodile. It they could not they were to climb onto a high rock until they know where it is.
The author is an elder of the Bunitj clan in Kakadu National Park ( )
