This book is an informational picture book that explains the life cycle of a caterpillar to a butterfly. This book is good for a first or second grade level. The text is simple and the pictures are clear. I like this book because it would be a great book to start with because it gives the basic stages of how a caterpillar changes, and could be used as a good first day of a lesson on this idea. This book would be good to use as an anticipatory set to life stages of the caterpillar, and then move on to diving deeper into each stage. ( ) I really like this book for younger grade levels. It goes through each page and speaks of how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly. I also like how there are realistic pictures of the different stages to show students what it actually looks like. This would be a fun book to read before possibly having the class grow butterflies as science lesson. Genre: Informational Genre Critique: This book is a good example of an informational text through the use of facts (about the life cycle of the caterpillar), pictures (that help explain what the text is saying), and an informative note in the back explaining more about the process of a specific kind of caterpillar. Review/Critique: I thought this book was very basic and easy to read and is definitely suited for a low level reader. It gives all the basic information needed though about how a caterpillar turns into a beautiful butterfly. Media: Photographs A caterpillar changes into a butterfly. ■ Nonfiction informational narrative ■ Third person ■ Present tense ■ Onomatopoeia ■ Concise text with little redundancy ■ Repetition within sentence for emphasis and to denote the passage of time ■ Two photographs and section of text on a page ■ Compound words: milkweed, upside, butterfly ■ Uses longer letter patterns to assist in decoding—compound words, smaller words within longer ones ■ Notices repetition within a sentence—understands this gives emphasis ■ Identifies sequence ■ Inferential reading ■ Retells sequence ■ Synthesizing information from the text and photographs geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
