I guess I thought I ought to read this book - due to interest and personal life reflecting the issues in this book. I didn't get very far though - it's not written in a way that could hold my interest.

I also felt very far away from these American teenagers on a personal level - non-standard sexuality is really the only thing we have in common. Otherwise the things that matter to them are not really major for me. They all go on about their families and list exact age for instance. ( )

In Your Face: Stories from the Lives of Queer Youth gives youth perspectives on eleven issues of interest to youth: feeling different, reconciling with religion, coming out, and more. The cover design (and title) portrays a general theme of pride and acceptance, which may attract gay or questioning youth. The chapters are organized by issue, with subsections for each youth’s response so that readers can focus in on issues that are an immediate priority. Youth responses are the result of peer interviews, so all answers have a casual tone that may put readers at ease. Patron population should be considered in light of the book’s strong language and frank sexuality, but it is recommended for young adult non-fiction collections in public libraries. ( )
