( ) These are short anecdotes (and/or photos) from domestic and foreign travel that were submitted to a column in Budget Travel. I really think I would have enjoyed them more if I'd only been able to read a single issue's submissions at a time. There is unevenness in the quality of writing and in the humor of the individual episode. I also noticed that a lot of the stories seemed to involve monkeys. They were supposedly humorous, but the editors put some of the better stories in the beginning and toward the end of the book, but the remaining stories leave much to be desired. If you want a humorous travel story, watch one of National Lampoon's Vacation movies and skip this book. If you think you've had an interesting travel experience, you probably have nothing on these folks. Taken from actual travelers' stories, these stories look at the weird, humorous, and "What have I gotten myself into?" moments people have had. All these stories are short which makes it an excellent book for reading in small doses, or those times like using the bathroom where you couldn't finish a longer story. You'll be chuckling long after finishing these stories when something else may bring one of them to mind. Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. Though I am grateful for my early reviewer copy of "A Stingray Bit My Nipple," I was surprisingly disappointed by it since I am a sucker for some good travel stories and tales of 3rd world mishaps. The stories are reprinted and compiled from Budget Travel Magazine. A grainy generic travel pic graces each page accompanied by a brief, cheesy anecdote. Maybe 1 in every 10 are mildly funny. Torkells should have stayed home.Hungry for travel tales that will entertain, amaze and fuel your geographical wanderlust? Read Lonely Planet Unpacked or its fine sequel Unpacked Again. Those books are intelligent and well-written, hilarious and tragic, compelling and stimulating, travel writing at its finest. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
One of the things I love most about our 'True Stories' section (and by extension, this book) is that readers are so willing to laugh at themselves-they send in what are sometimes very embarrassing stories, because we all know that that's life, especially when you travel." --Erik Torkells, editor, Budget Travel From the French-kissing giraffe to the Coke-drinking camel, Budget Travel's "True Stories" feature proves that life when traveling is indeed stranger and funnier than fiction. Collected by Erik Torkells, editor of Budget Travel magazine, these tales of adventuresome calamity and hilarity are an irresistible read. Over 200 true stories are included. Stories have been submitted by Budget Travel readers and many feature real and hilarious vacation photographs from their travels. From the couple in Belize who had a chicken lay an egg in their bed while at an eco resort, to the traveler who accidentally set her hair on fire while lighting a prayer candle, this book proves that the best memories come from moments when your trip is less than postcard-perfect.
