Close to Spider Man marks the debut of an exciting new literary talent: a collection of connected stories whose female narrators seek out lives for themselves amidst the lonely, breathtaking landscape of the Yukon. The young people in Ivan Coyote's deeply personal stories are looking to make a break from their circumstances, but the North is in their bones: so is their connections to family, friends, and acquaintances. Like the protagonist in the title story, a waitress whose attempts to help a young co-worker saddled with a lunatic father finds her running across rooftops and climbing ladders; by getting close to Spider Man, she gets closer to freedom. Startling in their intimacy, the stories in Close to Spider Man make up a moving scrapbook of what it's like to be young and queer in the North, journeys imbued with the colours of a prescient sexuality and an honest heart. Runner-up, Danuta Gleed Award for Short-Fiction Now in its third printing.… (meer)

I bought this book as a discard from the young peoples section of the Claremont Berkeley Public Library. It makes me so sad they got rid of Closer To Spider Man. If I had access to a book like this when I was growing up, my life would have changed. The feelings of isolation, misery and confusion I experienced growing up were disabling. Alienation from other humans is a terrible thing to endure, especially when a preteen and teenager. This book could save lives. It should be on the required reading list for middle schools. Then again, empowering butch and lesbian girls isn't on societies agenda. Quite the opposite.

I'd like to have a few hundred thousand copies of Closer To Spider Man to seed around Junior High Schools and High schools. Even the junior and State colleges in my backwards area of southern California could benefit. Maybe that's something I could do. Drop a copy off in the quad and hope for it to find a friend in need. Ivan do you discount in bulk? ( )
