Well written, but sometimes too well researched--the main charactor makes her own ketchup for a young boy with corn allergies. Also the main charactor is a RN in an emergency room, but we never see her at work. Nursing is a full time profession and a way of life. Nurses do not get time off. Seidel could have kept out many of the details and the book would still have been a good read. I adored Kathleen Gilles Seidel's A Most Uncommon Degree of Popularity so much I read it in one sitting and promptly bought a copy for my mother to read too. I was rather excited to see she had a new book out, although I'm still not sure why I didn't hear about it when it was published last spring. Keep Your Mouth Shut and Wear Beige is a delightful novel told from the perspective of Darcy, a recently divorced ICU nurse and mother of two, a senior in college and a senior in high school. The book takes its title from the advice given to the mother of the groom: keep your mouth shut and wear beige. Although the story is told from the perspective of Darcy, Kathleen Gilles Seidel does a masterful job of understanding the perspective and motivations for actions of each of the characters. This feat is not easy; the book is less than three hundred pages and there are a considerable number of major characters. Keep Your Mouth Shut and Wear Beige is funny, smart and touching; the characters are endearing. I'm desperately hoping for a sequel, or at least another novel from Kathleen Gilles Seidel soon. I'm about to delve into the more romantic novels of her past as a current substitute. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Darcy Van Aiken is doing fine, thank you. She's an ICU nurse with an "amicable" divorce from her husband Mike, two great kids, a cute little house of her own, and a prescription for Ritalin. When her older son Jeremy gets engaged, Darcy has to figure out if Rose, the bride's mother, is going to be her new best friend or the mother-in-law who insists that all future holidays be celebrated in her home. Meanwhile Claudia, Darcy's ex-husband's new girlfriend, beautifully dressed with perfect taste, can't help thinking she would make a much better mother-of-the-groom than Darcy. It's a battle of will and wits. What Darcy learns about herself --and about family, and friendship--makes for a delicious, hilarious, touching read. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

Darcy has been single about three years. Her youngest son is a senior in highschool, her oldest son about to graduate college and head to graduate school...in the midst of all these big life changes, her oldest son proposes to his girlfriend. This leads to Darcy meeting and interacting with her exhusband's new girlfriend.
The new girlfriend jumps into the wedding planning and takes over in major ways. You'll probably be very happy if you don't know someone like her in real life.
When she's rude to Darcy, and she can be very rude to Darcy, you will rightfully be very irritated with her.
The scene is definitely set for a very interesting year of wedding planning and a very interesting wedding. ( )
