The idea of this book is a laudable one, how to implement it is the difficulty. The book presents 10 ethical values for parents to teach their children. They are: Respect, Honesty, Fairness, Responsibility, Compassion, Gratitude, Friendship, Peace, Maturity and Faith. Of course the best way to teach is by example,and Dosick does give a lot of examples from his own life and his own kids, and many suggestions on how to make these values part of the family's reality. Every value is presented with several stories which exemplify that value or at least makes one think about the value. It also presents examples from people's lives, and then questions for your children to discuss. Each chapter ends with a prayer from various sources. The problem is really bringing in all these lessons into your life, and getting your children to actually take them seriously. The book relies a lot on religion, which is not a bad thing in itself, but supposes that one is a 'believer', especially for the last chapter on faith. In the end, the reason for becoming an ethical person is because God is. That doesn't do much for me. I also don't think the stories themselves, while interesting, will make the value a 'real' thing for children, whereas the suggestions (volunteering at a soup kitchen, etc.) very well may be the most useful part of the book.
