The narrator is severely unlikeable and I can't stand the narration. I just couldn't do this one. Maybe another Banks book is bette suited for me. I got to about 40 pages in before giving up on this. Incredibly raw and kind of breathtaking as you start to realize what's going on, this is put together in a way that initially seems kind of slapdash but Banks has a genius for returning to what seemed like trivial incidents and just building and building on them. I think the ending is a bit of an eye-roller, but this is still remarkable. Really good thriller, after Canal Dreams it rekindled my faith in the author. I guess it all comes across more believable when it's set in Scotland and not fictional future Panama. Even if the plot itself isn't all that much, the characters are meaty and memorable (even if most of them are stereotype caricatures). ...and I want to play Despot. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

COMPLICITY n. 1. the fact of being an accomplice, esp. in a criminal act A few spliffs, a spot of mild S&M, phone through the copy for tomorrow's front page, catch up with the latest from your mystery source - could be big, could be very big - in fact, just a regular day at the office for free-wheeling, substance-abusing Cameron Colley, a fully paid-up Gonzo hack on an Edinburgh newspaper. The source is pretty thin, but Cameron senses a scoop and checks out a series of bizarre deaths from a few years ago - only to find that the police are checking out a series of bizarre deaths that are happening right now. And Cameron just might know more about it than he'd care to admit ... Involvement; connection; liability - Complicity is a stunting exploration of the morality of greed, corruption and violence, venturing fearlessly into the darker recesses of human purpose.
