The secrets of plants that cling, grip, and climb, from the inventor of the vertical garden. Patrick Blanc, an artist with a green thumb, has created dozens of his admired botanical tapestries in public and private spaces around the world. In this oversize, all-color book, he explains how to create plant walls using more than one thousand plants, drawing on his observation of natural milieus, his technique of growing on vertical surfaces, his savoir faire, and his passion for plants.--From publisher description. I was fully prepared to appreciate the visual beauty of Mr. Blanc's works while also smugly decrying their longevity, planting methods, and overall engineering. I had already dismissed vertical garden installations as more folly or whimsy than permanent architectural/landscape architectural features-- what I found, however, is that in addition to being an absolute superb plantsman, Mr. Blanc is also a brilliant engineer who has created perfect, durable, and sustainable designs with his vertical gardens. Indeed, they are biofiltration systems in their own right.
This book is saturated with brilliant photographs and sketches as well as coherent and intelligent prose by Mr. Blanc. His vertical gardens run the gamut of indoor and outdoor environments, climates, and exposures, and all of them are really quite beautiful. ( )
