Lawrence Wetherhold is a recently widowed literature professor who is a numb and chilly intellectual. He rebuffs his students, ignores his own teenage children, James and Vanessa, and spurns cries for financial assistance from his ne'er-do-well but rather soulful adopted brother, Chuck. After an accident and Lawrence goes to the hospital, he is deprived of the right to drive. Janet is a physician and former student of Lawrence who remembers her disappointment in him as a teacher and role model. But, Janet and Lawrence become romantically involved. Meanwhile, Chuck and Vanessa try to come to terms with each other and prove that their relationship is another sign that the Wetherhold clan has become far too insular and self-referential. It’s a good cast (Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ellen Page, and Thomas Haden Church), decent dialogue, pretty scenic shots, but only intermittent laughs and tepid pacing.
Movie trivia fans will note that although the Steel City is not known as a movie-making mecca, this is the second Pittsburgh-based film for Parker. She also starred with Bruce Willis in 1993’s Striking Distance. Those interested in another movie with a Carnegie Mellon English professor overcoming personal and professional problems might consider 2000’s Wonder Boys, starring Michael Douglas, Tobey Maguire, Frances McDormand, Robert Downey Jr., and Katie Holmes. Personally, I enjoyed both of these a lot more than Smart People.
